Sailing Club

The NMCI Sailing Club is perhaps CIT’s newest sports club. It was started in 2007 by the students of the National Maritime College of Ireland and made its first appearance at the last event of the Intervarsity Circuit in Schull as CIT Sailing Club’s 3rd Team. With no budget for a 3rd team, the NMCI students, with the help of John Clarence (Head  of College, NMCI), and Ger Lowney (CIT Administrator, NMCI), sought and found the funds needed to attend the event.

In the academic year 2007/2008,  the NMCI Sailing Club was formerly recognised by the CIT Sports Office. Members of this new club did not waste time and set about fixing up the fleet of six boats belonging to the CIT. The boats which had been left in disrepair in Schull for a number of years were brought to the NMCI where four of the six boats now sail regularly out of the Maritime College. The remaining two are still in need of attention, and spare parts.

The NMCI Sailing Club has now also been recognised by the I.U.S.A. (Irish Universities Sailing Association). This is thanks largely to the vital support and guidance of the very experienced and hugely successful CIT Sailing Club. The NMCI Sailing Club has attended the first two Intervarsity events namely the Easterns in Wexford and the Westerns in Bantry and is now gearing themselves up the Southerns in Baltimore.
