Marine Communications

The Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) covers all aspects of maritime communications under the SOLAS convention, from legal requirement and equipment compliance down to operations and testing. It covers communication and data-transfer between ship and shore and ship and ship. NMCI has dedicated GMDSS laboratories which contain all the equipment needed to train students in the full use of GMDSS equipment to General Operators Certificate (GOC) standard.

The laboratories are divided into two training areas known as the GMDSS procedures area and the equipment familiarisation area. The procedures area makes use of a full mission GMDSS simulator suite consisting of 13 networked computers running KONGSBERG simulation software. The equipment familiarisation area is made up of real GMDSS equipment, standalone station simulators, and other training equipment.
