Fire Fighting
Personnel on board a ship must be able to deal with incidents of fire while a ship is at sea. All mariners are trained in fire prevention and fire fighting techniques. Students at NMCI are exposed to live fire scenarios in the Fire Training Unit (FTU) where they apply their training and use fire fighting equipment to control the fire.
Natural gas is the main fire supply in the FTU, but the burning of kerosene in the engine room is an extra option. While gas fires are burning, synthetic smoke can also be generated in these areas to simulate real fire situations. An instructor uses plug in pendants to control all gas fires at the source and monitors all students’ actions. An inbuilt control room is manned during all training sessions to maintain radio contact with trainees and to monitor ventilation, fires and emergency lighting.
The damage control reconstruction unit is also housed within the fire training unit and it is used to simulate flooding damage to a ship. Students learn how to limit the damage and control the flooding.
