Certificates of Competency

Certificates of Competency are qualifications of engineering and navigational watchkeeping which are required in most classes of merchant ship. NMCI offers courses which prepare candidates for the following Certificates of Competency.
 

Marine Engineering

  • Second Engineer Officer Marine Engineering
  • Chief Engineer Officer Marine Engineering

 

Deck

 

  • Officer of the Watch Navigation
  • Chief Mate
  • Master

Candidates wishing to progress with Deck or Marine Engineering Certificates of Competency must accumulate specified sea service before applying to be considered for enrolement. Candidates should be in posession of a Notice of Eligibility which is provided by the Irish Maritime Administration. Details of the candidate's professional seatime and STCW Qualifications should be forwarded to : stcw@dttas.ie when requesting an NoE.

The qualifying sea service required to enable a candidate to enter for a Certificate of Competency examination is set out in the "Directions as to the Examination of Deck Officers under the Merchant Shipping Acts" or "Directions as to the Examination of Engineer Officers under the Merchant Shipping Acts” as appropriate.

Candidates are advised to consult these directions which are available from the Government Publications Sales Office, Molesworth Street, Dublin 2 or from the Irish Maritime Administration website.

Eligibility for Certificate of Competency examinations is determined by The Examiner (of Masters and Mates or Engineers as appropriate), at the Marine Survey Office.
