STCW A-VI/6 (6) Designated Security Duties course

 

Objectives

Those who successfully complete the 1 day course should be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge to undertake the duties assigned under the SSP. This knowledge shall include, but is not limited to:

• Knowledge of current security threats and patterns
• Recognition and detection of weapons, dangerous substances and devices
• Recognition, on a non-discriminatory basis, of characteristics and behavioural patterns of persons who are likely to threaten security
• Techniques used to circumvent security measures
• Crowd management and control techniques
• Security related communications
• Knowledge of emergency procedures and contingency plans
• Operation of security equipment and systems; for example Long Range Acoustic devices, Electric fences, water monitors, and Ship Security Alerting Systems
• Testing, calibration and at-sea maintenance of security equipment and systems
• Inspection, control, and monitoring techniques
• Methods of physical searches of persons, personal effects, baggage, cargo, and ship stores.

 

Learning Outcomes

 

The intended outcomes for security training at this level are that the student:

• Understands how to maintain the conditions set out in a ship security plan
• Understands how to recognise security risks and threats
• Understands how to undertake regular security inspections of the ship
• Understands the proper usage of security equipment and systems, if any
