Full Description:
This is a practical course using the 360° Full Mission Bridge utilising briefings for the underpinning knowledge.
The participants will each be given a role during the different manoeuvres. Each practical manoeuvre will be debriefed.
The course will cover the following theory and practical topics:
1. Introduction – registration and health and safety briefing
2. General Overview – discussion on location, environmental constraints, types of manoeuvre.
3. Fendering – discussion on positioning and capabilities of fenders.
4. Interaction – discussion on interaction effects that will be encountered during the various stages of different STS manoeuvres.
5. Exercise in open seas, favourable weather conditions:
a. Same size vessels underway (VLCC, Suezmax, Aframax, Panamax, Product as necessary)
b. Different size vessels underway as above
6. Exercises in restricted/sheltered waters, favourable weather conditions:
a. Same size vessels underway mooring (VLCC, Suezmax, Aframax, Panamax, Product as necessary)
b. Different size vessels underway mooring as above
c. Same size vessels static mooring as above
d. Different size vessels static mooring as above
e. Tandem mooring operations
7. Exercises as outlined in 4 & 5 above but with weather conditions at or just exceeding the recommended limits (these are run to show why the limits are in place and/or as a decision making exercise for an abort)
8. Emergency Exercises – various scenarios incorporating steering failure, rudder jam, engine failure on either vessel
9. Incident Review – recreation of past incidents to provide development and discussion on best practice.
