B Kavanagh (NMCI, Ireland), M Hundahl (Denmark), J Bakker (Netherlands), A Angelsen (Norway), R de Bruin (Netherlands), C Vartsos Tzannetakis (DG TREN)

The results of their web-based questionnaire which polled 109 maritime lecturers and 154 maritime industry stakeholders found that –
  • Lecturers are well educated professionally and educationally
  • The majority (71%) of maritime lecturers have worked at sea
  • Half of the sea experienced lecturers have worked as a senior officer
  • More than half of the lecturers have undertaken none or little training on how to teach
  • Lecturers could develop their teaching by refreshing their practical expertise on board ships

Recommendations from this report include -
  • Linking up of teaching with daily practice on board ships
  • Employing a majority of lecturers who have had sea experience, preferably at senior officer level
  • Increasing lecturer’s knowledge of educational and pedagogical techniques
  • Improving contact and collaboration between maritime education institutions and stakeholders in the maritime sector
  • Ensuring that the majority of lecturers are specialists who teach a few subjects and have in-depth knowledge of these areas
