New Associate Head takes up his post at the NMCI

Commander Mark Mellett of the Irish Naval Service has recently taken up the post of Associate Head at the National Maritime College of Ireland. He also holds the appointment of Commandant Naval College. During his time to date with the Naval Service, he has commanded three Naval Ships including the LÉ Eithne during the 2006 South American Deployment and has also served in both Afghanistan and Lebanon.



Commander Mark Mellett


Commander Mellett is a graduate of the United States Naval War College Newport RI, the Irish Defence Forces Command and Staff School and the Royal Naval Colleges in Greenwich and Dartmouth. He holds a Masters in Government and Public Policy from University College Cork and is a member of the Nautical Institute.

Having a keen interest in research, he is currently undertaking studies in the area of Oceans Governance with the Department of Political Science and Sociology, National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG) and serves as a Research Associate with the Marine Law and Ocean Policy Centre at NUIG. Commander Mellett is married with four children and enjoys running, cycling and gym training
