New Head and Associate Head of College get settled in at NMCI

Monday 11 December 2006

The retirement of Mr. Donal Burke and the posting of Cdr. Tom Tuohy to the LE Eithne saw a new Head of College and Associate Head of College begin their tenure on the management team at the National Maritime College of Ireland in the past few months. The new Associate Head of College, Cdr. G.P. O’Flynn moved into his position during August while the new Head of College, Captain John Clarence took up his post in early November.

Captain John Clarence started his sea going career with Shell Tankers (UK) Ltd, working on a range of tankers and gas carriers within the Shell fleet. After fifteen years at sea, he took up a lecturing position at South Tyneside College in the UK where he was involved with the education and training of merchant navy officers from the UK and around the world.  He was actively involved with all aspects of deck maritime training and consultancy on behalf of the college.

Captain John Clarence, Head of College NMCI

Whilst recognising the opportunities that the National Maritime College provides, he wishes to develop the range of courses to exploit the magnificent resources available at the college in Ringaskiddy.  The production of bespoke training for ports and shipping companies is a major part of the modern maritime industry and should complement the well regarded training of Irish students for the various shipping companies around the world. John says  “The National Maritime College of Ireland is the latest maritime centre in Europe and it is important that we play a unique European role and build on the long established tradition of maritime education in Ireland.”
