First Years sail with the Jeanie Johnston

Thursday 02 November 2006

Thanks to the generous sponsorship of a number of ports and shipping companies the Year 1 Nautical Science students were this year able to make a week-long trip on the tall ship  "Jeanie Johnston". The purpose of the trip was to introduce the students to many of the important aspects of life at sea, in a real environment.

Joining in Dublin, the vessel sailed north towards Scotland in the company of Rod Cooke and Cormac MacSweeney, two of the Nautical Studies lecturers. All the students undertook watches and participated in all aspects of shipboard operations. Training in seamanship, navigation, chartwork and radio communications was conducted throughout.

The trip provided the students with a unique opportunity to see in practice what they learn in the classroom.

Following a 24-hour stopover in Peel, Isle of Man the vessel returned to Dublin one week later, where the students helped the crew prepare the vessel for its winter lay-up.
