Their Majesties King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway open conference at NMCI

The National Maritime College of Ireland in co-operation with the Royal Norwegian Embassy and Innovation Norway hosted a conference titled ‘Maritime Governance – Our Legacy’ at NMCI. The conference was opened by Their Majesties King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway on the occasion of Their State Visit to Ireland.

Mr Noel Dempsey TD, Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources introduced King Harald V to the conference before His Majesty gave the opening address. The Royal party was then escorted on a tour of the college by the Acting Head of College, Mr. Daire Brunicardi and the Associate Head of College Cdr. Gerry O’Flynn. A demonstration of the simulation facilities was provided by the Kongsberg Group and Lodic while staff and students of NMCI conducted a training exercise in the survival pool.

The conference ‘Maritime Governance – Our Legacy’ called to attention the mutual challenges facing Norway and Ireland in the maritime sector and was attended by specialists from both countries. Speakers included -

  • Dr. Henrik O. Madsen, CEO of Det Norske Veritas
  • Dr Peter Heffernan, Chief Executive of the Marine Institute, Ireland
  • Mr Lasse Pettersson, Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Centre (NERSC)
  • Ms Val Cummins, Coastal and Marine Resources Centre, University College Cork, Ireland.
  • Ms Kirsten Ullbaek Selvig, Director General, Ministry of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs, Norway
  • Mr Daire Brunicardi, Senior Lecturer, National Maritime College of Ireland
  • Lt. Cdr. Brian Fitzgerald, Irish Naval Service
  • Mr. Terje C. Gloersen, Director Norwegian Shipowners’ Association
