NMCI Lecturers present papers at MARSIM 2006

Lt. Cdr. Jack Hickey and Capt. Bill Kavanagh presented the results of their research at the International Conference on Marine Simulation and Ship Manoeuvrability, MARSIM 2006, which took place recently in Maritime Institute Willem Barentsz (MIWB), Terschelling, the Netherlands.

Lt Cdr Jack Hickey is the Officer in Charge of the Technical Training at the Naval College in NMCI. He worked with Gisle A H Fiksdal from Norway on a Maritime Incident Management System (MIMS) which is a real time software package used for training senior personnel. Lt. Cdr. Hickey presented a paper at MARSIM 2006 outlining the operation of MIMS, which allows the senior management of a vessel to train in managing a crisis. i.e. flooding, fire, grounding or other incident in a simulated environment and to utilize the available resources on board to address the crisis and subsequently replay their actions and discuss the outcome.

 Capt. Bill Kavanagh, Lecturer in Navigation at NMCI presented a paper on the summary of his research which examined the development of ship simulation assessment as a complementary form of assessment to written examinations for competency-based assessment in Coastal Navigation within the Seafarer’s Training, Certification and Watchkeeping Code 1995 (STCW 95 Code) for qualifying stage Officer of the Watch (Navigation) (OOW) students in Ireland in 2005.
