Golden Jubilee of Marine Engineering Education in Cork

Monday 29 May 2006

In 1956, the All-Ireland Hurling and Football finals were postponed, Ronnie Delaney won Ireland’s first gold medal in 24 years at the Olympic Games in Melbourne and Elvis Presley dominated the music charts.  It was also during that academic year that the education of Marine Engineers began in Cork.

To commemorate Mariners personal yet integral role in this momentous time in the history and development of Marine Engineering in Cork, the National Maritime College of Ireland organised a reunion for all past Mariners and friends to mark and celebrate the unique occasion “Celebrating 50 Years of Marine Engineering in Cork”.

The proceedings included an informal get together at the Rochestown Park Hotel on the Friday 5th May.  On Saturday 6th May there was a guided tour of the National Maritime College of Ireland and a “glance at the past” exhibition followed by a reunion dinner at the Rochestown Park Hotel that evening.  A great evening was had by all!
