First Students to be Conferred in NMCI

The first conferring ceremony of degrees at the National Maritime College of Ireland, took place on Friday, 10th of February 2006.The event was presided over by Councillor Jim Corr, representing the Governing Body of Cork Institute of Technology. The event was conducted with the usual decorum and gravitas and also a great atmosphere of achievement and reward, not only on the occasion of the students’ success, but also on the success of the whole maritime college project.
Other dignitaries attending were the senior staff of CIT including the Director Dr. Brendan Murphy, CIT and naval staff of NMCI, representatives of the Naval Service including the Flag Officer Commanding, Commodore Frank Lynch. The master of ceremonies was Mr. Donal Burke, Head of College who introduced the graduates to the Director to receive their parchments.
The graduates and their families and friends were entertained to light refreshments in the college after the ceremony.
Colin Harrington was awarded the Clyde Marine Trophy as the best Clyde Marine Cadet at the conferring. This is the first time the trophy was awarded and it will alternate yearly between Marine Engineering and Nautical Science graduates.
